August7, 2019, Raipur: With meticulous planning and precise execution, the cardiology team at NHMMI Narayana Multispeciality Hospital has successfully completed yet another complicated procedure. This is the case of a 39-year-old lady who presented to the hospital with dangerously high blood pressure. After evaluation she was found to have ‘Mid Aortic Syndrome’ meaning, the large blood vessel that supplies the blood to intestines, kidneys and legs was severely blocked.

“The location of this block was the reason why this case was so complicated. It was located exactly at the segment from where one vessel to the intestine and two vessels to the kidneys were branching out.” told Dr Sumanta Shekhar Padhi, Consultant Interventional Cardiology at NHMMI Narayana Multispeciality Hospital. “Correction of this condition through surgery would have been very high-risk and there was also a possibility of serious damage to the kidneys.” he added.

The conventional ‘Covered Stent’ which is commonly used to keep the arteries open was also unsuitable for this case because placing a covered stent in the main vessel would have blocked the branching vessels. Hence doctors decided to use an endovascular open celled stent. Instead of doing a surgery, they approached the block through a catheter. The block in one of the artery to the kidney was opened with the help of balloon angioplasty and then a stent was placed to prevent it from blocking again.

The procedure went as planned and there was no damage to the kidneys or any of the 3 arteries arising from the blocked segment. The procedure was performed by Dr Sumanta Shekhar Padhi under the guidance of Dr Hemant Madan, Senior Interventional Cardiologistat Narayana Superspeciality Hospital, Gurugram.

“It was a rare corrective procedure for an equally rare condition. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of non-surgical treatment of mid-aortic syndrome in Chhattisgarh” told Mr Vineet Kumar Saini, Facility Director, NHMMI Narayana Multispeciality Hospital. NHMMI Narayana Multispeciality Hospital should feel proud of having a team of such skilled and experience cardiologists.
